How coaching works

New Waves Coaching is a custom-designed, developmental experience for the mid to senior level executive who wishes to enhance his or her effectiveness and leadership capabilities. The initial assessment and work may begin in person, and the on-going coaching is conveniently by telephone with on-site follow up as required.

About coaching

I like the straightforwardness below. It goes straight to the point. I support these two points.

Deciding to invest in coaching for you or your organization is an important choice.
All our clients have one thing in common: they are ready to commit to taking action.

We could write 50 explanations and they would all be true and expand our definition of what coaching is. It really boils down to this:
- It is a collaborative partnership that facilitates human excellence.
- It supports people in discovering and maximizing their professional and personal potential.

I like the examples. It's an excellent idea. It gives a clear sense of what coaching can look like and how it impactful it can be.

Here's a few examples:
- Monday, 9am - The phone rings. On one end is a senior executive from a mid-size electronics company, the other, an executive Coach. Thirty minutes of brainstorming, goal setting, strategizing and planning ensue. When the session is complete, the executive has created a clear, concise action plan for the week that continues to close the gap between where he is and his desired objectives.

- Tuesday, 7am - A Vancouver based Coach rings in to a bridge phone line, where six area managers of a multi-national corporation, from three different countries, meet each week to brainstorm and strategize on better ways to integrate the planned global initiatives.

- Wednesday, 2pm Los Angeles, CA - A Director at a metropolitan hospital celebrates with her Coach about a successful feedback session with one of her managers. Not only did the manager receive it well she is excited about creating a plan to get "back on track". The Director discusses next steps with her Coach.

- Thursday, 4pm, New York, NY- A year to date from their first session together, a newly published author celebrates with her coach on the successful release of her book. The excited writer then wonders what she will need to put in place to achieve her next goal. The planning begins.

About us

Who are we? I like the clarity, straigthforwardness, believes / philosophy stated

New Waves is a training and consulting firm specialising in shaping large scale change. What is my mission?

Our methods and business philosophy have been developed over the past 20 years through our considerable consulting and training experience.

We believe that the key to shaping our futures lies in the arts of Conversation and Design:
Conversation is talking through problems in an open, free flowing dialogue
Design is the art of inventing new things (not organising them), of turning thinking into action

We empower people to think and act together more effectively, placing them on the front foot and enabling them to design better futures for themselves, their organisations and their communities. Excellent! That fits perfectly New Waves

We liberate and focus the natural intelligence that lies hidden in organisations and communities.

What makes us different

We’ve developed a powerful approach to thinking that gives groups an alternative to analysis and logic.

Methods of analysis are great for downstream problem solving, but they don’t work for creative thinking and they don’t inspire people.

We use a fresh approach to thinking, hence "2nd Road". This approach is based on Aristotle's great tools of 'rhetoric' — conversation, invention and intent.

Innovative and progressive organisations know that their most valuable asset is the intelligence and creative spirit of their people. We run programs that ignite this natural intelligence.

Our involvement with our clients includes coaching and facilitation, but our focus is on equipping and training people within organisations.

Powerful fact - vision for Magalie
Magalie is a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach through The Coaches Training Institute and a Professional Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation. Less than 8% of all professional coaches have achieved this level of certification.

How we do it

New Waves engages with organisations in four main ways. I like this example below. I need to define how I envision my business to do it (achieve our vision)

1. We design and facilitate workshops for strategic thinking.
We call this our Strategic Conversations System™.

2. We equip people with skills, new tools and new thinking to work in the dynamic world of change and design.

These education programs share our own toolkits for change so that organisations do not have to keep using us as external consultants but can develop the skills to use our methods in-house.

3. We consult in major design projects.
We focus on interaction, information and service design.
These projects design new customer experiences that start from ‘pull’ of the customer needs rather than just pushing products onto people.
Our design projects roughly fall into two categories:
Internal projects where the ‘customer’ is the staff member working with the organisation’s system and processes, and
External projects where the ‘customer’ is the end user experiencing the products and services of the organization.

4. We consult in major capability building programs around design.
We help companies build the new core competence of design within their organisation. This requires a program of work with several streams of intervention. It’s a unique offering that very few consulting firms in the world can make.

Our courses

Need to clarify what I want to teach / coach on. Below is a clear simple example of a company use to state what they offer.

New Waves is committed to training and equipping people for change. Wherever possible we seek to transfer our skills and passion to our clients.

What we teach
Our courses develop the skills to plan, design and implement change. This includes the ability to think more clearly and creatively, to facilitate, and to communicate. We have a special focus on developing leadership capability.

How we train !yes! This parts fits the business I am envisioning
All of our courses address both business applications and personal development. This is what makes them so inspiring and popular.
They combine fun, self discovery and deep learning.
They also combine theory and practice.

Who we train !Yes! I need to define clearly who I want to train
We concentrate on four main segments within organisations:
Leaders – These one day modules focus on motivating and inspiring managers to become leaders
Change agents – We develop internal facilitators and change agents.
General audiences – These courses introduce our key toolkits to the wider organisation. They are shorter and provide a good overview of the tools.

Our courses include:
Leadership Plus™
Meeting to Making™
Thinking with Power™
Top down Reporting™
User based Design™

Our vision

My personal vision Needs clarification - I like the vision below for its clarity, simplicity and the way it differentiate itself - putting itself into perspective.

Thinking clearly and creatively is our passion.

We believe that people can craft the future by thinking together effectively.

We don’t focus on the interpersonal side of change – like team building, relationships and personality profiling. We respect these tools but, on their own, they don’t equip groups to design better futures.
Nor do we offer the ‘scientific’ method of thinking – it is too mechanical and linear to handle complex changes in human systems.

Rather we have discovered, over 20 years of consulting and research, a ‘2nd Road’ to thought that liberates people to think through change quickly, effectively and humanistically.

This ‘2nd Road’ of thought was foreshadowed by Aristotle, but it has been largely neglected by the Western World for 400 years. This way of thinking involves the two big forces of creativity and community, rather than the scientific logic of cause and effect.
People create the future by dreaming about it and talking about it, not by analysing it.
We have turned this age-old approach into a modern methodology for change.

Our Values

Four values underpin our work. We find that we work best with clients who share these in some form or other.

1. Transformation, not the status quo
People are on the earth to shape and form their worlds in order to achieve noble purposes. Our focus is on strategy and design, rather than just operations and delivery.

2. Collaboration and engagement, not individualism
Positive and sustainable change happens through communities of action, not just individuals.
We employ open conversation rather than command and control.

3. Simplicity and elegance, not complexity and volume
In the knowledge era, simplicity and elegance are to be treasured. Simplicity and elegance can only be achieved through human interpretation and judgement. We use one page models and documents to eliminate ambiguity and enhance comprehension.

4. Social and ecological outcomes, not just economic outcomes
Our purposes must always be greater than mere economics. We are committed to support projects that are aligned with the highest good of humanity. Social and humanistic goals must balance economic ones. At the end of the day organisations exist to serve people, people don’t exist to serve organisations.
